How old can you go ?

Following on from the discussion regarding summer hours etc. , I was wondering what age you could work until as a gardener full time and still be competetive / profitable.I know that you get retired folk mowing a few gardens for pin money on the black, but I'm talking 40 hours a week hard graft.I'm just wondering 'cos I'm 43 on Sunday and feeling worn out most evenings.

  • I'm 43 and hope to have at least another 10 in me at the rate I'm going...? Strange but the more you do the more you can do, the body is a wonderful thing, when I first started out it almost crippled me but now I can regularly out compete how I was in the early days..plus I'm doing 6 days a week most weeks now, today I started at grafting at 9am and was still going at 7.30pm ! Mother nature waits for no man Lol.

I get worn out like you but after a good nights kip I'm normally good to go, glass of wine and a hot bath every evening helps, using the right tools correctly and working smarter and pacing yourself all help ;-)

    Hang in there

    • Well I'm 26 and working as hard and as fast as I can! My expectations are to be working like this for many years, hopefully building it up to a reasonable level where I can oversee many projects and manage many people at one time. But that is all in the future so for now I'll take every day as it comes!

  • As I said in the other post my Dad is 72 and still going strong.
The thing is when he turned 60 he would say 'only another 5 years until I can retire' he said this for 5 years until the day come, he lasted 3 months and just could not handle doing nothing all day, so he went back to some of his old clients for a day then two and now works 3 1/2 days a week.
Why? It's because he loves what he does.
  • Sadly your probably right Rowly.
I think the days of early retirement are over except for the lucky few, and 70 will be the norm for retirement.
  • I'm just starting out at 24, so hopefuly got plenty of 'juice' in me to go. This does seem to be a good steady physical trade, requireing good general knowledge as well as brawn, so it should hit all the right buttons!

I'm coming up for 46 and I sold up my business when I was 39 but then spent the last five years renovating our farm here.

I broke my right leg twice in my late teens and my right leg is shorter than the left and my spine is constantly under pressure - I didn't want to be working physically had for others into retirement age.

I would say however, I agree about the mental aspect of physical work and I've never let my slight disability get the better of me. If I were to spend all my time vegetating I would die physically and mentally.

I once employed a gardener who was 63 when he joined us and could outwork anyone of any age; he had the most amazing mental strength - had worked hard all his life and came to me for the last two years and I was very proud to be the one to buy him his gold watch for his retirement.
  • I am 44 and knackered most days! I probably can keep going until I am 50 doing the hard grafting, but am hoping that once my teenage children have flown the coop I will try and find a head gardener job somewhere, because I think a lot of my tiredness comes of trying to manage 15 gardens by myself! Just one garden... what bliss! Mind you, I might get a bit bored...
  • well, i'm 35, feel bout 55 and my business partner is 58 and SHE is fitter than me!! I see the government in their wiseness have increased retirement age for me, to 67 so obviously they expect that i will be able to do what i'm doing now, then! For someone who has scoliosis and arthritis in the spine ( since 17) and a stroke at 23 i think im doing pretty well but doubt i'll go beyond fifty! Been doing this job for 15 years and another fifteen terrifies me!!!!
