How (not) to sell yourself...

I sometimes get approached by landscapers or maintenance companies looking for new business. I am happy to receive such approaches and will keep contacts on file for future reference if they look interesting - but an email I received this week sadly did very little to attract my interest....

The email was sent to about 30 recipients (all visible) of other designers and landscape architects and simply said:

Hi There

Can you please tell me how can i get on your approved contractor list.

Kind regards

That was it. Nothing about their company, their work, or experience - and no website link. From the address given, they are also based an unrealistic distance away from me and my client base (probably at least 2 hours away).

They may be great but I have nothing to go on. So methinks the poor chap is likely to get very little response from any of those he has sent this to, despite having spent time googling up a long mailing list.

For other landscapers and maintenance providers maybe starting out or looking to increase their contacts and approaching designers and landscape architects in the hope to pick up more work - what advice could we on LJN offer?

My first two-pennyworth would be:

  • Do your research - find out a little about the companies you are approaching - a few well targeted emails or letters to companies in your local area could achieve a much higher return.
  • Don’t send a blanket email with all the other recipients visible (make us feel special!)
  • Tell us a bit about your company, where you operate, your services, any specialisms, your experience, your qualifications or awards.
  • Tell us why we may be interested in working with you. What makes you stand out from the crowd?
  • Offer recommendations e.g. from other designers you have worked with.
  • Add a website (even if it is a page on another site) where we can see examples of your work.

Any other tips we could give to people in his position? What has worked for you?
