How long is your Christmas holiday?

Christmas was the only time of year I felt I could take a holiday from work and stay around the home. Any other time, because my office and yard was based at my house, I could not relax or stay away from the daily dealings. Apart from our litter collection round and town council standby services, the whole of the Christmas week was shut down and, invariably with weekends we took at least ten days in total. All staff were paid or had an extra two to three days as a bonus on top of the cash bonus in their pay packets. I enjoyed the week preceding Christmas and work was fun and fairly relaxing. What are your work and social habits over Christmas - is it a full lay off or do you continue as usual (after the Bank holidays) - weather permitting?

  • We're shutting down from the 23rd until the 7th this time. I was originally going to go back on the 2nd or 3rd as usual but thought 'what the heck'!

I fully intend to not think about work matters for this period (I wish! lol!)
  • Actually I'm off until the 5th... or so I've just been informed :) Today's cold snap must be affecting my cognitive whatsits!
  • I'm working christmas eve but only till midday.
Then in between christmas and new year 29th 30th and 31st...then start back on the 5th January...that's all weather permitting of course!

Before I started employing staff, I absolutely loved working Christmas Eve - either as a paid jobs or a wood cutting and splitting day, followed by a walking tour of our village with Christmas cards.

I remember one year, after cutting and splitting logs all day, I had to deliver cards to our friends and neighbours. I left my best friend Clive until last (the house behind us on the common).

Clive got out the Irish malt and it was the best spontaneous glass I have ever had. Unfortunately, Donna's Mother was due to stay Christmas Eve through to Christmas day and it was a big and (stressful event).

The impromptu and fun time was cut rather short when Clive and Hillary got a rather tearful call from Donna telling me in no uncertain times to get my bony back end, back home, pronto.

We all laugh our socks off now but it was a life changing moment at the time.
  • Last xmas I had only been in business since Sept, I was on my knees come xmas, I was a sorry mess !!! I had about 10 days to ease the aches & pains then back out there again...I'm fairing a lot better this year & have been match fit for some time now, it's good to feel up to the task in hand every day.

Anyroad off this year just before xmas & back just after new year...although a odd job or two will no doubt crop up in the xmas week..just for beer money mind ;-)

The only other days off I seem to get are very rainy ones or like now...with a cold ! I might be able to manage an office job feeling like this but not planting trees all day it's not fair on the customer or me.
  • Worked all through last christmas and this year as been non stop from february to now with only a week off. So after talking to a builder who every year at xmas takes 6 week off, after working all year, i have decide to take a well earned break over the xmas period myself.
With the slow down in work i have decide to go and see my bro in australia. Off on Tuesday for 4weeks. No frost, rain, sleet, snow..just sun and sand and plenty of beer.
  • We normally stop for the last week in December and the first week in January as standard as, as others have noted, this is often the only time we really get to stay at home and spend time with the family without 1000 other things going at the back and front of our minds!! Moreover Glasgow is super-cold and wet/icy this time of year and work - especially digging work can be very difficult so the break can be prolonged by another week or so allowing us to re-focus marketing and make sure all our gear is up to scratch etc.

This year we are visiting my father-in-law's family in Portsmouth for Christmas and New Year which will be a first but looking forward to it!
  • Usually stop 23rd Dec. but stopping 19th this year and starting back 5th Jan. I ususally cook Christmas Lunch/dinner with all the trimmings on the last day so early stop around 2.30pm
  • "Actually, I am on call 24/7 365 days a year" Redstar, think you might be one of the fantastic people who put us all back together again when we are broken. Love Ya xx
