A simple Calendar/Task application either truly cloud-based or an App with local cache so you use it when not connected/online if you have a good Smart Phone.
toodledo and using quickbook for invoicing and estimates etc makes it all easy
Cheap and simple solution.
The non technology approach.
Buy a week to a view diary.
When you complete a job enter customers name and amount owed, at same time Issue the customer with an invoice.
As soon as they pay you mark paid in the diary.
End of the week carry forward any outstanding amounts to next week.
Chase the amounts as soon as they exceed your invoice terms.
This also helps when you bring your cash book up to date.
The best way is the simplest way - A quality hard copy diary is what I use as they never run out of charge and get lost less often than my phone. And as Lawnman says on how to chase up outstanding payments.
I was going to go down the computer based route.. but at the moment i am coping completely fine with my diary.. folders of outgoing invoices and cleared invoices etc etc.
You are the boss any terms you like, 7 days or payment on completion, just make sure customer knows before you start work.

I use a system called 'Jobber'.

You can invoice each time before you leave the property... It may not be for everyone as there is a monthly charge on it
It's also very simple to use.

We have a diary in the truck(day to a page) which is completed as the day goes by.
We also keep a loose sheet ring folder for our everyday maintenance gardens. Each garden has it's own A4 excel spread sheet per half year with 'tick boxes' and every visit recorded. Any minor issues (eg broken fence panel) is photographed and sent through to me by email.
We run a truck and a van, so on top of that I keep my own diary and at the end of each month I gather all together, marry them up and out go the invoices all in one lump.
