I had an email from Hort Week today stating that my limited online access to Hort Week was being removed from next monday,

Quote : "As a registered user of Horticultureweek.co.uk you have been benefitting from limited access to our online articles, however from 23rd July 2012 our website will only be accessible to paid subscribers"

Well, I wont be paying, so they lose yet another registered user...

Head in sands approach to totally block online access ?

Can understand it if some 'premium content' or benefits were available....but for general hort news............nah. No way, plenty of other sources

So is the beginning of the end for this publication ?

Well it shows their advertising isn't working.

I don't often visit Hort week these days as it doesn't really offer me anything I can't get elsewhere. In fact I haven't even logged into my free account in about two years. I suspect that this may be the case with many.

It's no secret that Hort Week's owners, Haymarket Publishing, is heavily in debt

This is the end. I used to subscribe but haven't for 2 years. A shame but that is how it is.
  • It is a very difficult for the print media at the moment to come to terms with the change in the way people access imformation. All types of print based media from the daily papers to directories are suffering the problems of falling demand which are causing them great difficulties.

People it seems are not prepared to pay for online content, I cannot think of anything that I would willingly pay for, certainly when there is free content available elsewhere. Realistically I would imagine we are in a transition period, if as seems blindingly obvious the vast majority of people are unwilling to pay for online content then media publishers will need to raise revenue through advertising and or sponsorship.

I think we are yet to see the real innovation or original thinking needed to cope with these changed circumstances, when it does come I think it will surprise all of us.

I have just heard that Hort Week is going bi-weekly very soon.

Well, Hort Week are still emailing all their 'online' members to get them to subscribe and gain access thru their Paywall.

It seems they are 'staying' weekly online, but the physical paper will go to alternate weeks.....which suggests they have had to rethink their strategy in face of online competition.

I emailed the Editor -Katie Lowe - two weeks ago about the change and how potentially short sighted it was to exclude the 'masses, but have recieved no response ( despite a reminder ) other than an automated Haymarket Publications email.

Now, as well as emailing old subscribers, I have received an 'offer' by post to subscribe to HW for ~£100 pa, similar to my previous subscriptions. I note the new strap line:

"Horticulture Week is the UK's leading business fortnightly for the professional horticulture community......"

Is it a bold claim ? Well..... I guess there is no other "fortnightly" publication .....;-) But similar money for 50% less publications ?

Note the 'urgent, please return today' at the top;-0)
