HELP - Van has died.

I`ve just had the worst news possible for the start of the new season, my van is Bo**oxed!!!I had scraped together enough money to have it serviced and timing belt replaced, so off it went to the garage, whilst they had it, the van broke down, after some expensive investigation work, they have concluded that the fuel pump has sheared off in the tank and created metal fillings in the tank. Outcome is that they need to replace the tank, fuel pump, fuel lines, fuel injectors and some other stuff, but i`d fallen over by this time so had stoopped listening. The cost - wait for it - £3900! ! ! ! !I only paid £2800 for the van.So just wondered if anyone has any bright ideas of what to do?? Shall i just flog it and start again. I obviously can`t afford to repair it at that price. With the repair bill, what i paid originally for the van and what I`ve spent on it already, I could have got myself a nice new van.The van is a renault master, MM35 med w/b, med height, 55 reg with only 75k on the clock. What shall i do? What van shall i get next?HELP HELP HELP....Jim

  • Yeh people have already suggested that i go with a Ford for similar reasons.
I only went with the master as i thought i was getting a good deal and because of the size, suited my needs perfectly.

The main problem i have now is getting rid of a dodgy van without losing much money, and obviously having to spend on replacing it with somthing similar that wont let me down!!

    Nightmare.
  • I`ve just picked the van up and driven it for 40mins with no problem showing at all.

I`m thinking I might auction it if I can, has anybody done this? How much does it cost? I don`t mean on ebay, a proper car auction.
  • £3900, ooh-er Mrs.......another option, fit a separate independent fuel pump with new pipes to the fuel inlet, fit a couple of in-line fuel filters to catch any metal, these are a few quid each, and blank off and disconnect electrics on old tank mounted pump.
all you need to find out is,what pressure the old pump ran at to get the correct pump,i don't think too high a pressure matters ,as these pumps have pressure cut offs.
its the sort of pump you have to put on Subaru sti etc when you go above 350 bhp etc.
if you use the same pump wiring the pump will auto prime when ignition is on.
  • I find Vans are very expensive to buy if good condition. and hard to find with genuine history and no vat..

    They are also very loud.

I like a 4x4 which is great to drive , and always have a seperate trailer (3/4 sizes), so i can use my cjeeep for private use also.

i try and keep it clean as its good for image and shows you care.!

im Looking at changing from LPG ( ive had for 5 yrs) for a diesel as i will have more room in the back and wont have to go out of my way for lpg stations , although i like the fact that its 'greener'..........

what do you think of a diesel shogun colin? ? as opposed to a petrol frontera 'b' ?
  • Hopefully everyone who tows has a safety chain attached. You have more chances of being "pulled over" if you don't have one.

Safety chains are compulsory. The fine for not having an operational one attached are IRO £1,000. I don't think that there are any exceptions these days for braked vehicles. Unbraked are still OK I think but I would check the regs change all the time.
  • Right the latest is that the van is still running, and TBH its the best it`s run for ages! But I just can`t take the risk of it letting me down or beeing stranded somwhere miles from anywhere and another big garage bill.
So its going to auction. It was suposed to go today but i`m waiting on a new MOT cert as the one i have says its done starship mileage, after a lot of investigating on my part tracing everytime its been near a garage for anything to make sure the mileage is correct.

So hopfully it will get a half decent price and i will be able to put the money towards a 'Bomb proof' Ford transit.

I` looking at getting a White Transit, T350 mwb, semi high roof, or would go long and high for the right van.

Has anyone had any experience with these perticular vans? Anything to look out for? Anything that i need to check has been done?

Am i right in beeing told they dont have a cambelt, they have a lifetime gurenteed chain?

Any advice is very welcome as i`ve already lost a couple of thousand just at the start of the season.

    Cheers Jim
  • we have 2 52 plate transits,one is a 90/350 tipper the other a 125/350 tipper,3 way,crew cab, power in the 125 is great ,the 90 could do with being 100,both lwb.
duel mass flywheel is rubbish, they stall sharply if your not used to it and the swarf from the clutch gets into the starter motor and shorts out the electrics(central locking will actuate).
best driving position of any vans, watch out for the large door mirrors, many a glass has succumbed to a hedge or transit approaching from the opposite direction.
white is the best colour for resale but by the same token may cost a bit more.
would not have a sprinter, cabstar or french stuff.
  • What is the MK7 like? What sort of age are we looking at here?
I`ve probably got 6k to spend max. So i`ve been looking at around 04/55 reg with around 60k on clock.
  • Just following up on this old thread

Iam in the prossess of getting a new van. The choice was between the citroen relay lwb or transit lwb all new shape.

My question is what engine size for the tranny would be best and would i be better of with rwd.

    Cheers
