Difficult to tell but could be a patch of woodrush as that will not cut cleanly with a rotary mower, no matter what you do!

as adam says check that the blades are sharp sometimes dropping the blade a notch can help and it looks like the lawn would bennifit from a weed treatment i have even gone over patches first with a strimmer
James, judging from the photos and looking at the underlying sward it appears that there's no grass just broadleaved weeds, get some praxys and treat the whole lawn and overseed asap.
