Getting rid of Cleavers

Went to a garden that required sorting and borders full of Cleaver (the sticky stuff) but also full of plants.Anyone know of any herbicide i could put down to get rid of problem without affecting plants or am i just going to have to get on my knees and pull all the Cleaver out as normal. The borders are of a large area so iam wanting to take the easiest option.

  • cleavers is really easy to get out by hand, - and there isn't a herbicide that would deal with that in a border amongst plants (any thing that would kill the sticky weed would kill the plants) - fraid you may need to get on hands and knees, but try a spring tyne rake held upside down first, this can be gently lifted through the foliage, the plants (unless very delicate) will stay in place, the sticky weed will lift out.
  • Just get your hands to it Steve - it's fun ;-) I've looked it up and this article says the seed only remains viable for 2-3 years - you could put down a weedkiller with germination suppressant.

But I have a fondness for this plant... I remember once sitting on a grassy bank with a certain girl - and seeing some cleavers - I unleashed my special charm on her.... I told her some of its many common names and then the proper name - I know just enough of them to impress customers - and the girl I now live with :-)
