getting commercial work

just a query. What is the best way to get commercial work. Grass cutting around factories etc. I have had some success writing directly to the manager/ owner. what does everyone else do?P.S advertising has never worked for any jobs we do. word of mouth is by far the best. also leaflet dropping has worked to a degree. lots of effort and time but far better than newspaper adverts ect

  • Haven't done much commercial work but I do note any new building of houses and flats going on in the area (not much at the moment I know). I make a point of stopping and finding the foreman, having a chat and giving him (yes always a man) a card. Doing this actually resulted in my first job ten years ago.

With the slow down, credit crunch (hate that expression) and the time of year, I now find myself doing it again! Worth a try?
  • All flats/residential areas have a housing assoiation who manage the property the best way would be to find out who looks after what and ask to be put on there books.

The problem for a lot of gardners is that once the associations have found a contractor that they like and trust then they tend to stick with them, rather than put the work out to tender.
  • depending on the value of the tender,if its a big one,it has to go out to tender.....or is that just public sector,i cant remember without looking it up.large ones even have to include European quotes.(EU)
always pop in and ask and leave a card, nothing ventured and all that.
  • Due to the fact that housing assoiations arnt regulated they dont have to give anything up to tender, public sector i think is a differant ball game altogether.
Saying that i do the local land registry and have been doing so for the past 5 years with out having to put in a tender.
