Hi Everyone.

We have fuel leaking from the air filter and exhaust on trying to start an engine on one of the etesia machines we have. It is turning over but not firing and the fuel leaks as you try to start it. My knowledge of engines is slowly advancing but I'm wondering if anyone out there has any ideas on the problem as its quite a specific set of symptoms. Valve settings/timing perhaps?

I have the workshop manuals in pdf for this engine but I can't find these specific symptoms in the troubleshooting pages.

I'm interested in increasing my knowledge of engines in general so any pointers to useful websites or books would also be useful if anyone has recommendations.

Thanks in advance for any reply posts!

  • Hi

Might be something as simple as the float sticking in the carb, try knocking the casing of the carb a few times (not to hard)

    Good luck

  • Ive had the eaxt same problems on my Pro46, twice now.

Its usually the float jamming in the carb on Varnish-like deposits. Cleaning the carb usually sorts it - though I've had it happen twice now 3 months apart.

I've attached the carb rebuilding PDF for the GCV160 Engine.

Take it apart and give it a good clean.

  • Lawn Lover and David - Thanks so much for the replies

David, thanks for the pdf - thats great! I will strip the carb and give it a clean, checking the floats. What do you use to clean it out? A generic carb-cleaner?

    Much appreciated!

  • Alasdair - msged you how i do it - Although for public record - I replaced with a generic copy carb as it was causing me many other problems.

Why not try turning the fuel tap off every day at the end of the last job and run the carb dry to stop it gumming up ?

  • Good advice Stuart however its not always me using the machines !

    Thanks for the reply!

Fuel taps on most mowers should be turned off, even when just travelling between jobs. The tank sits higher than the carb does and gravity does what gravity does.
  • Add a little STP carb cleaning additive to petrol tank and the varnish soon removes and lubes the moving parts at the same time. Worked for me.

  • Thanks so much everyone. I followed Daves advice and stripped the float mechanism and cleaned out the bowl, reassembled and its fixed. Dave sent over some PDFs of carb mechanics which were very helpful. Problem is fixed and Ive learnt a lot along the way.

Adding carb cleaner is a much easier option for next time - just a little difficult if the petrol is pissing out at the time!

    Thanks again so much.

    Alasdair
