Filling a pond

I've been asked to fill an old koi pond that is sunk into the clients patio. I've worked out the dimensions as 8.5 cubic metres (300ish cubic feet). She wants to lay a patio on the top so that it becomes a useable space. What would you all suggest I use for filling it? I'm thinking just Type 1 MOT so that I can compact it, leave it a little while and then patio on top without it sinking? The pond is enclosed on all sides by patio and is well into the ground, so I don't see horizontal movement as a problem. Just wondered if anyone else had any better ideas?

  • Dig out any soft ground then if you layer the type 1, 6 inches at a time and compact (ideally with a vibrating roller) there shouldn't be the need to leave it to settle.
  • If you can, hire a jumping jack, if you do then try digging down 500mm, this method will assist your confidence when compactions and movement are concerned, execute your preparation properly, as every thing in landscaping / life is formed off excellent preparation.

Appreciate it, thanks guys. I think the gravel first option looks favourite - it is a deep hole... Luckily there is no soft ground as the entire pond is thickly concrete lined within a patio.

    Many thanks!

In a situation like this I would always go for a non-compactable material like 20mm clean gravel / shingle for the main volume of fill.

Lay a Terram type fabric over the shingle and then top off with 100 - 150mm of Type 1 and compact as usual.

This will cut down you labour costs and ensure there is no chance of subsidence.

Bore some large holes with a diamond core through the concrete base, just to be safe

    Hi Kerry

I'm playing in the engine room and experimenting with filtering software (not that we need it). I've turned it off now.

Don't worry - filtering won't be used on LJN.
