  • I use a stihl FSA85 battery strimmer for the bits of grass the mower wont reach. It's incapable of flinging stones with enough power to smash a window when used at the correct spool speed. Maybe less torque or something. Yet powerful enough to do the job neatly & quickly. I demand a rapid work rate. Own more powerful machines, but this one is just about capable of skinning a rice pudding, as it were

  • Christ that's bad luck after 20 years! I just use a strimmer, on my 6th year, no smashed windows yet.

  • I use an Ego ST1400 cordless strimmer with line changed to 2.0mm line. Variable speed is important, using just enough to cut the grass without flinging stones too far. Also the thinner line means less likely to throw stones. Finally if very close to windows/glass doors I also try to turn around so that fling direction is away from the glass. I broke a big conservatory window before when using a petrol strimmer with 2.4mm line. Very expensive lesson!

Stihl battery kma135 Strimmer on low power, also edging shears.

    4 windows in 20 years. 2 with a mower/ 2 with a petrol strimmer. 2 times in a space of a week.

  • I struggle with the noise of power tools and try to avoid them. For edges I use Bahco lawn shears and find them very good indeed. You get a crisp edge with no risk of scalping or broken windows.

Easier access in difficult to reach areas with the horizontal cutting blades. Stamped, fully-hardened, double-bevelled blade with black Xylan® coatin…
  • Stihl fs40, when edging just run at low power and strim so any debris is flung away from property. 13 years no breakages, tempting fate 🙂

Makita DUX60 with the M400 edger - shielded on one side so keep the open non shielded side away from the windows but if really close to a window that drops to groud level, say a garden room door I switch to edging shears.

  • I use edging shears when I can, a much better finish than strimming. Plus when on an hourly rate it doesn't matter to me being slower. I have a client with an area of grass 5x5 M with a cpl of small apple tree's wthin it. This is right next to a cedar greenhouse with full lenght toughen glass panes.  I refuse to go anywhere near it with the strimmer & the edges get left if the mower cant reach them, or sprayed off!

One window smashed in 10 years....... & that was my van side window, guy from autoglass said he replaces them almost every day from strimmers. I always turn away if vehicles are close.

    • I always use edging shears & I can edge pretty quickly.  I find the Spear & Jackson eversharp to be very good & very light.

  • What Ian Harvey said👍.
