Digging beds out of turf

I'm digging 70m of new border around a lawn next week and wondered the easiest way to do this. I plan to spray glyph over the border then simply rotovate it up before edging. How do juicers feel about doing this? It won't be planted up immediately but will grass survive this and cause a problem in future?I'll use a tarp as a straight edge along a string to prevent the rest of the lawn being killed.Option 2 is to hire a pair of helping hands and do it with spades the old-fashioned way and lift the turf off before digging.

  • i'd use method 2 as i've found when i've rotavated, not only do I get tufts of grass, but you cut up the roots of Dandelions et al, and then you have to hand weed the border for ever.

    for 70m, i'd hire a turf stripper.
  • It depends on how quickly you want to plant up. Glyphosate is on contact and shouldn't travel through the soil. I think I would prefer to do the old way as well just to get it done straight away without waiting for weedkiller to take effect.
  • I'd take up the turf and weeds without weedkilling, if your customer doesn't mind the labour cost.
  • Cheers all, will be hiring a turf cutter then using a mattock to loosen the beds before cultivating with a small mantis.
  • sounds like your customer will get an excellent start to their bed.
