Cscs cards

HiWe do a lot of our contract work for a large building company in the northwest, and have now been told that we may now need the cscs card http://www.cscs.uk.com/Has anyone on LJ ever had to use one of these to maintain gardens on a partly built housing development?

YesIt doesn't really matter what you are doing but when you work on a site for a main contractor you have to conform to Health and Safety.

Buy the disk off ebay, £3.00 and also the book £10.00

study for a couple of hours

take the test, details are on the site, £25.00

job done, it lasts for 5 years

if you like you can then pay £25.00 for the cretdit card style cscs card.

any other info please pm me

      Cheers

  • your better off buying the card with your picture on because a lot of places will only accept them.
  • As Karl has stated, buy the PC revision disk - It has all the answers that they may question you on. Once you pass this will qualify you for the basic H&S level but depending upon what professional qualifications you have and or work exp that some one can sign off you can also add other "trade skills".

We can't get on any building site without the CSCS card being shown. Well worth getting one.
  • Since its not actually a Building Industry Activity, your employees with simply have to take the Health & Safety module
  • Csc cards are mainly for building construction work and such a gardener should not need to acquire one.
I had a similar experience and i rung a helpline and they confirmed what i just said.
csc cards should really be nothing to do with you, as you are not really anything to do with the construction in building sites
  • Well i suppose if it is cheap enough to do it might be worth getting these cards. You never know it may come in handy at some point in the future. Another string to your bow etc etc
If it is quite expensive to aquire i would simply do a short health and safety course, it must be a similar thing!

its not the work you require one for as such but safety reasons while you are working on there site , ( a sense of trained responsability) as there are so many safety issues , cuts out the dick---ds from the trained responsible people

  • Is the ccsng widely known? In the construction trade it has always been CSCS as a requirement. For £25 money well spent but only if you are likely to require having the need for one.
  • Never been asked for it. I got put through by a previous employer and must say what a joke the test was! Multiple choice questions such as:
If you want to walk past a reversing digger, what do you do? a. wait for it and make sure the driver sees you before walking past, b. walk quickly behind it, c. tie a chain attached to your ankle to the bucket and go for a ride!

Makes me wonder what the real world value of the card is.
    • Hi all

Thanks for all the replys iam seeing there Hs officer on monday so I will get the bigger picture then.

From what I can see you won't get on any site without it. There are grandfather rights but the on site safety officer won't care no card no entry.

  • Hi Martin

We all have them at Giles Landscapes however I have only ever been asked for mine once. They are getting much stricter about it now though - it's essential really if you are working at housing developments.

    all the best
