Crushed concrete as base

Hi guys, my first post in a while as v.busy.

my local aggregetes company keeps trying to get me to buy crushed concrete from them instead of my usual favourite Granite mot type 1.

I know they are making a killing on this crushed concrete and they tell me its £7 a ton cheaper a ton than the granite, they also say its been certified type 1. its the same size as the granite has dust and diffrent size aggregates that make it look like it will bond together well.

Has anyone else swopped or  using this produc??t,is it any good or as good as the granite?? I have so far turned them down as Ive been doing driveways just lately but am thinking about trying it out on my next paving job.

Maybe a cheaper,greener way forward!

What do you paving experts think?

  • I would disagree. Price doesn't dictate ability of stone to accomplish this purpose. In my mind as long as it has all the necessary constituents in it (i.e the variable sizes - 40mm to dust) it should be good once compact.  Maybe specify that it have some content of hardcore to aid load-bearing strength?

We only pay £12 + vat for our mot type 1 whinstone loose in trailer from quarry.

Totally agree with Gary. Type 1specification has no bearing on the parent material. It is all how it conforms to SHW803 (Specification for Highway Works). If it has the certificate it is a comparable product and almost certianly offers a saving. Quality varies with uncertified products such as 75mm down crusher run which can contain wood, carpet, steel etc. Also, the fact that you have a certifcate means that if anything goes wrong down the line and the customer claims the material you used was unsuitable you are covered.

As said above. Try it and see :)

  • Thanks guys for your input, I will try it out in september and let you know how I get on, I have a run of fencing jobs in the mean time!

  • I've just used Recycled Type1 today and will be using it next week as well - at £10 a ton it can't be beaten, nearest non recycled alternative is £17 a ton. I find it to as good as any other, plenty of fines and compacts well as with all T1. Bits of brick and often alot of stone in their as well. Big advantage is that it does not attract the Aggregate Levy Tax, so an extra £2 saving there as well.

Make sure you get Type 1 Certificated and not just Type 1 Graded. Type 1 Graded will mean that it is just a 40mm to dust aggregate. Brick content should be minimal as brick will not pass a frost heave test.
