Compost screening

Evening everyone

Does anyone have any ideas on screening a large compost heap, previous gardeners just piled whole area up with no turning over or segregating heavy or woody material and customer is keen for the material to be used in the garden.

Depending on the site, you could hire in a trommel or soil screening machine - although several eterprising souls have made their own with varying degrees of sucess.

How large an area is it?

  • I have something similar myself, the best compost will probably be at the bottom, so i would attack it from one end, peeling the less well rotted top layers off to one side and digging out the lower strata to spread on the garden, removing any lumps and bits of plastic etc as you go, not a high tech solution but i can imagine the cost of hiring a machine might be prohibitive, a fork and a wheel barrow are the main tools needed; the partially decomposed material left behind will break down better after this process.....When spreading on the garden a few lumps will not be visible with a bit of judicious raking when covered with plenty of the good stuff and will continue to break down

Digger with screening bucket should sort the job out. We have done it before.

    • I have a mate with it on a 5 tonner or job, but access only allows for 1 tonner, got a mate with a hiab on a 10 tonner, probably pick it all up and put in clients field next door and use the jcb with screener.

      Thanks
