We stopped buying expensive secateurs some time ago for exactly the same reasons.
We have been buying a twin pack , one bypass and one anvil types in the pack around £6 from Homebase.
They do the job and last us about 6 months, what's not to like !!!
Those cheap secateurs cut rubbish! I've never lost a pair I use a holster.
I Think thats the key , try not to lose them but it happens sometimes .
when i lost my good pair I bought a pair off Amazon they are currently called Kamtop pruning shears 7/8 " 22mm sk-5 steel blade bypass pruner with holster they cost around £15.95 including postage . The blades are described as made from German steel , I had my doubts but they have proved to be excellent secateurs , really sharp with a nice blade clip you squeeze the handles to release the blades to a satisfying click , its a manual operation to lock the blades with none of that swinging blade clip nonesense that gets in the way when you are pruning . The free leather holster is simple but decent quality for the price .
I bought a second pair of the same secateurs and use them as my main secateurs , The colour is blue . The description is a bit weird as also described as portable tree pruner secateurs with safety lock . i can vouch they cut through 10mm apple tree stems like butter the only link i have is in my Amazon order file which says buy again .
They are sold on amazon by the proster store and were next day delivery as standard
A holster is the answer and red tape on the handle on every other small tool. I bought 6 fulcrum weeders and I haven't lost one yet.
If your local dealer does Stihl then their secateurs (bypass) are only about £10! The anvil ones, which I Use far more, are about £26.
bright orange handles too
The Stihl ones are good value, I go for the ones that are about £20. They stay sharp, are easy to sharpen, don't seem to require tightening very often and they're bright orange, so you will struggle to lose them!
Aye - when starting - a got the best plant scissors I could afford, you know, being a pro and all that.
3 expensive losses later.
Ho ho ho ,found a triple pack for £3.00 in Asda - so I got 4 packs !! Annoyingly I never lost anymore, and only binned those that lost springs (1) or got too blunt as I abused those mofos with gusto. Still have one pack still unopened.
ALSO annoyingly - I found one of the AWOL pairs, which now reside at homesies
Wilko, they're £3 and honestly there's not much difference between them and £20 pair in my opinion. Plus, when they get blunt just buy another pair, no hassle.
I think over the last 11 years I've only misplaced two pairs of secateurs, i dont tend to put them down, rather they always go straight into a side pocket on my trousers/shorts.
I don't like the cheap ones, for years now I've used Bahco ergonomic ones, far less stress on the wrist with extended clipping! around £25 a thro.
I have the same pair of Felco's and holster I bought twenty years ago.
The secret- never put them down.
I'm always wearing the holster so they are easier to put back than put down and pick up again.
