That is absolutely bizzare, i was just about to start a discussion to find out whether anyone knew how to deal with ant colonies in lawns, and i saw this! i'm watching this post with a close eye now!!
No solution for the ants? Do the ants damage a lawn? My customers lawn appears to have an enormous colony beneath it, today the flying ants were surfacing and there are a lot of brown patches! is that the ant damage?

Unfortunately all chemical solutions for killing ants in lawns have been banned for sometime.
I haven't tried Nemasys ‘No Ants’ Nematode but I believe it would be worth a try. Check out http://www.harrodhorticultural.com/HarrodSite/product/Pest%20Contro...
Merit will control ants.
I also squirt ant powder into any wasps nests I find in clients gardens cheap & does the job
re. the ants – don't mean to be a spoil sport – but what's the point.. there'll always be more ants..
I found a list recently of things you could do with do with slugs:
Photograph them, so that they can give up garden grazing and jet off to become international models
Roll em up in puff pastry, bake in oven for 20 minutes and tell the guests, kids, vicar etc. that they're party sausage rolls
Learn to love them. Understand that in the eternal cycle of life, in the endless continuum of existence, they are no less significant (or hungry) than you and I, and no less deserving of love. Embrace them. Touch nirvana together.
Alternatively...Pick 'em up and slam between two bricks or nail them to the ground

Peppermint essence is supposed to encourage ants to move home. Never tried it but apparently if you mix peppermint oil with vodka then add it to a watering can full of water (the alchohol makes the oil mix with the water) and then water the nest and the surrounding area with the mixture. The ants will up sticks and leave. If you do try it - please let me know if it works, cheers
i dont drink but what a waste of vodka, i'd rather drink it
