Given several key tax dates are not far away for Ltd Co. and Sole Traders, I guess we all push it to the last minute for al manner of reasons, but what if you do file late ? The penalties can be harsh.

So if you do file late - are there acceptable excuses?

The link here is from a business website I subscribe to and explains the current situation with HMRC.

  • Hi Gary,

Gosh I've not posted on LJN for eons...*waves at everyone*

I got a £100 penalty for my tax return arriving a day late...Ggrrrrrr!!! I have appealed as I sent 2 tax forms off on the same day (in plenty of time to get there before the deadline) the other one arrived in time & received no penalty & mine got delayed in the post. On the appeal form there are a number of boxes to tick eg. delayed in the post (of which I ticked), illness etc.  There are also boxes to explain your appeal. The tax man was quick to fine me but I still haven't heard about my appeal yet.

Next year I'll send it a month before the deadline just to make sure!!

  • Did mine ages ago , because i'm a good boy!! :-D

I assume you have not yet paid............ ;-)

My last nine self assessment returns were all filed in January, some on the 31st. This year I pulled my finger out and the return was submitted in June.

I won't pay a penny though until I absolutely have to!

  • I do all mine over the Christmas break, when I've got time. The accountant just fills in the figures and sends it electronically, often pretty close to the deadline but at least a few days before in case the system is down at the last minute. I've never heard of any excuse being valid, you have ten months to file it after all!

  • For those of you that do have accountants, please do him or her a favour and don't leave it to the last minute, as it plays havoc with work planning in their offices.  In most accountancy firms, about 25% of all tax returns filed are done in the last month (January).  It is all so avoidable.

Also, this year is the first year that fines will be applied for late filing even if you don't owe any tax. Be warned!

  • I do feel sorry for my accountant. He works 24 hours a day in late January in order to get everything in on time, sorting through bags of receipts and sleeping in the office.

And he does it all for minimum wage.....  ;-)

  • Good news!! I got my £100 penalty refunded :o))))) The Tax Tan must be in a good mood!! Result.

  • Has dimitri not commented on this thread? ... Strange!

  • During the summer I suffered a hand injury which stoped me working for several weeks - I was told by a friend (Trainee accountant) that this would be a valid excuse if it happend at the due time - I.e you were a week late in sending due to being in hospital etc.

Im sure alot depends on the type and severity of the injury but Worth sharing.
