Business Names for sole traders.

I'm  in the process of naming my business.. As a sole trader can i for example name my business Alan's lawns.. this is what i want to call it.. or would it have to be Alan McMillan's lawns.. which is my full name..also do i have to put services on the end?? Also if i call it Alan's Lawns would i have to put Alan McMillan trading as Alans Lawn's on invoices and all other buisness stationary.. or because Alan is my first name..i don't have to..Thanks again Alan!!

    Alan,

when we applied for Trading Standards Buy With Confidence scheme years ago, one of the things they were hot on was business trading names. They gave us 2 or 3 page guide sheet about what you could/couldn't do, what needed to be display at place of business, on letterheads etc.

    Here it is...Hope it helps

Not sure if being north of the border changes it >
  • I originally spent almost 2 days solid trying to come up with an original name and every single one was already in use.
Have a look at who's trading in your area and go for something else or just go by your own name/initials.
  • I think that if you're a small company, then the customer would like to see your name in the business name. It just seems to give more credibility to me. I think my customers would rather I was called Steven Whitaker Gardening services than "Lawnz R us" !!
  • Hi Alan

I agree with Karl, try and include the area that you cover in you business name.

With the area that you cover incorporated within your name go and search out all the free online adds that you can and sign up to them. I you are in a major city then it probably wont work so well but as i live and work in a small city several of my free adds appear on the first page. Write up whatever you wish to say about your services in "word" on your computer and then copy and paste into each of the free adds. Saves time and trying to remember how you described your services.

    Good Luck
  • Thank you all very much for you input!
Have now decided to call my business Alan McMillan's lawns..followed by..Grass cutting service, Cumbernauld.. this is what i've put as the header in my website that i'm working on at the moment.

I tried to think up a 'memorable' or 'trendy' name when I started out... I thought of 'Gaynor's Gardens' - someone else had that in another part of the country. After toying with a few other ideas, I gave up and just used my name - Gaynor Witchard Garden Design. Not an easy name to spell and not very imaginative - but I was too lazy to think of anything else!
