  • I have always found that the books by Dave Hessayon to be very helpful as a quick reference guide but wouldn't say they were the best.

    Hi

The ones I always reach for include:

The principles of horticulture by C Adams
Trees , their management use and cultivation by Bob Watson
Pruning trees and conifers by TOny Kirkham
    Touch Trees by Alex Shigo
Rhs enyclopedia of plants and trees

Of course no books can match a bit of dirt beneath your nails !
  • Some of the best reference books are the RHS plant encyclopaedias. They're quite expensive but cover almost anything you could want or need. I got rid of almost all my other gardening books and just kept those as they were always the ones I returned to.
