Best strimmer??

Right, I`m in the market for a new strimmer as mine has just broke!I`ve got a husqvarna backpack strimmer, very powerful, very useful and generally the dogs danglys! But it`s broken and cost around £700 to replace which i havn`t got.I also have a small bent shaft makita but it`s really a bit small and not that good for what I want. What does everone else use? Straight shaft? Stihl? Kawasaki? Backpack?? Bull handle??Any suggestions or advise please?Cheers Jim

  • Thats exactly what mine does.

I think it gets hot and somthing in the engine sticks, then when it cools down it will start again.
No good if your doing maintenence though.

my old fs80 has just about died, ive only had it since 2001
once it gets hot now it doesnt want to restart
  • Kawasaki KBH48-A. It's a fantastic strimmer/brushcutter - comfortable, powerful, the mutts I reckon. Have only used a coup;le of other ones as I always buy the same one from my local supplier. I buy them for a little over £300. Can't imagine how the more expensive kit can do much more than this machine?!

I have been using 4 stroke Honda strimmers on a daily basis without a problem since 2006. For the life of me, I can not understand why anyone would want to use a 2 stroke with all the pollution, noise and smell when you can now use a quality 4 stroke engine from Honda. My usual kit comprises of a Honda mower, 4 stroke Honda strimmer and 4 stroke Honda blower plus a can of petrol. No mixing, no mess and when I get home the wife can still get close enough to give me a greeting (ok, give me a kiss) without holding her nose.
Haven't tried 4 stroke hedge trimmers yet.
  • I have had a Husqvarna 335RX for nearly 2 years now and think it is a wonderful machine, comfortable, powerful and robust.
  • My Honda Strimmer was nicked bit I did give it a years use and I can say it was well made, a few things though it got worse to start as time went on the air filter was clean and the plug good maybe valve clearance needed doing ?? Plus the stop switch was pretty crap so I had to choke it to kill it most days ! I now run a Shindaiwa multi tool, maybe not quite as well made but soo far no complaints it's working hard and earning it's keep...time will tell ?

  • I know it's not really a professional tool but I bought A 'Robin' multi tool, I got a strimmer head that takes a blade and a hedge cutter/trimmer. All together cost me £200 from mow direct. It's lasted 2 yrs with no problems. It's not built as well as the Sthil products but has done me proud and paid for itself in the first week doing a big garden clearance. When I can afford to I shall up grade to a honda 4 stroke.

For 25cc Stihl are excellent. If you use a loop handle, (FS87, FS90) you can fit a hedgecutter attachment to turn it into a long reach hedge trimmer.

...you can also add a strimmer head onto the shaft of a Stihl long reach hedgecutter.
  • I use a small robin for my mowing jobs. It is very light and has proved to be reliable. For the bigger jobs I use a komatsu zenoah bkz5000, this backpack strimmer goes through just about anything. Incidentally does anyone know where I can source parts for the zenoah, the muffler has gone and it makes a hell of a racket, can't seem to find parts anywhere
