  • Funny how YAY is the only programme on R4 to which nobody admits listening.

  • Must admit I was a bit surprised that the businesses were reporting trade at 6 - 7% down last year. I would have thought it would have been more than that - it really has been an awful year, weatherwise.

I have always been critical of the 'coffee shop/knicky-knacky shoppe' add-ons to garden centres, but can see how they not only maximise profits, but probably more importantly, help survival.......... and this could be a lesson to us all. Don't stand still, diversification is the key to survival.

Agree. Same here, but I guess I/we look on it from our industry position.

If I talk to relatives, esp. my Mother they love the all inclusive garden centre environment.

A good lesson in survival in tough times as you say.

  • About twenty years ago my son was with me when I made a delivery to one of my garden centre customers, the manager a very nice man gave my son a big bag of pick and mix sweets, do you know Phil he said we take five grand a month on sweet sales.
One of my other customers was pushed under by the bad weather last year he reckoned his sales were forty to fifty percent down.
