Any recommendations for scarifiers?

New member here,

I'm looking at investing in a decent scarifier this year as I have several customers who's lawns badly need it and I could get more work if I offered this service.

I've been looking at the John Deere D45C, partly because I used to drive big John Deere tractors when I worked on a farm and it would nice to have a bit of kit with the John Deere badge on it.

Anyone used one of these or have anything they'd recommend? Look to spend up to 1k for something decent that I can use on large lawns but can be lifted out of a van.

Thanks in advance.

Eliet 401, but if you've got a ramp for your van
Don't hesitate to buy a camon they are bomb proof!!

  • Talking about scarifiers.... I've an old Sisis push scarifier which has the spring tines on it...... I've always found these very good and effective for getting thatch out. I'm sure there's an obvious answer for this question.......... why do most scarifiers use blades? From my experience, I've found the blade tips seem to round-off fairly quickly and then just leave grooves in the turf without removing much whereas the spring tines seem much longer lasting?

Wouldn't the spring tines be more likely to rip clumps out if it gets snagged?

Spring tines are used mainly to more surface scarifying ,if you want to go much deeper thats when the metal blades come in , regarding the blades rounding off on the ends ,I use tungsten tip blades they last much longer

You won't go wrong buying the Eliet, I own an Eliet 501 myself, great machine.

My thoughts on the John Deere are that they look as if they would get clogged up to easily when your taking lots of debris out.

I wouldn't recommend lifting anything out of the van, get yourself some ramps :)
