This morning driving to my first job, i kept getting a wiff of petrol. When i arrived and opened the back of the van the Stihl KM 130 was lying on its side, having fallen over which quite often happens, only this time 2 stroke mix was everywhere because the fuel cap had come away.
I tried to refit it but it wouldnt clip/lock into place, which is obviously why it came off, because i hadnt realised it wasnt closed properly when i filled yersterday evening. No matter how ive fiddled with it, it just will not close/lock properly. Its as if over night some 'annoying tool problem' fairy has swapped the cap for a different model!!!!!
I remember someone mentioning this issue before in a post, but dont recall how to fix it, if at all?

Had this problem with my strimmer a few weeks back
the 2 parts of the cap had become misaligned,
every time i tightened it up it would pop the cap off after 10 minutes or so
i just spun the top part round the right way, been fine ever since
The same happened to me with my Stihl chainsaw, however in this case i couldnt fix it. I must have spent 30 mins trying to spin the top part around etc, i ended up driving to my local repair shop where he sold me a new cap. The bloke there seemed to think that it was quite a poor design by Stihl. Quite annoying and dangerous when you got petrol pouring out all over the place.

I thought I was the only one that had problems with these caps!! I have struggled for 10 minutes trying to get my chainsaw oilcap back on...... eventually succceeded! I've also been strimming and the cap fell off with unfortunate results on the lawn!! As Chris says, you can get the 2 separate halves of the cap misaligned and you need to hold the bottom/inner of the cap and then twist the top section back anticlockwise. The cap then only goes on in one position as it appears that the 3 prongs/spurs that slot through the 3 recessesses in the tank are not all the same size and you need to line them up correctly! You also need to push the cap firmly downwards as you rotate it.
They are with out doubt, CRAP! We have 2 Stihl strimmers and a chainsaw with this stupidly designed cap. The newest Stihl machine we have (last year) a blower has a standard cap, so much easier to use. I ended up buying 2 new caps as I could not get one to work even after half an hour of trying. Sometimes they work, sometimes not.........grrrrrrrrr

Thanks guys, had another try this afternoon but the damn thing wont play ball! so off to dealer tomoz to get a replacement and a spare!
I had the same issue thought it had bust bought a new (e-bay second hand) one thinking it had a part chipped out of it.
Only when I messed around the following day did it all click back into place

I have a few stihl machines, and all are ok, and I have no problems, except the chainsaw oil cap, which I always have massive problems with. So I guess there is a problem with the design, because it is not 100% consistent.
Have now bought a replacement which works fine, have been messing about with the old one and in desperation, launched it across the garage! still wont work.
Whats most annoying is, comparing the new to the old and turning them while in the hand, they look identical in every position and yet the original just will not lock. So from working perfectly, to not working at all, how can just a fuel cap be so frustratingly complicated!!
The old screw type caps must of been to much hard work,
you know having to screw it on and everything,
so needed replacing with the oh so simple new type

We too have suffered with these 'caps', which is especially embarrasing when it spills and kills client's grass :-(
Shame Stihl GB don't participate in/on Social Media as they reportedly told me when we tried to get them on LJN - they might gain valuable feedback and/or offer solutions - and support their loyal UK cash cow Contractors, unlike Stihl USA who do a lot...
We've had a few 'issues' recently, which I would not haved expected - silly things......
Could Stihl being going out of fashion as UK Contractor's First Choice ?
