I have never worked out the percentage but a great deal of work comes to us through the internet.
We made our own website and I use google analytics to see how people get to us - 90% get to us through google search, then a few other enquries via freeindex, qype, yelp etc.
We come up on the first page of google for our key words - such as Gardening services Crawley. We have searched and searched the net for ways to optimise our webpage so that we show up on the first page of google. Having reviews on google places really helps too - we get a lot of enquiries that way as well.
On this thread http://www.landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/google-adwords-ad... there was a guy - Phil I think who offered some SEO help.
I only know the basics and have so much more to learn!
Hope that is helpful,
Susan
Most of my new work comes from people who found me online, and I prefer this. The jobs are efficient and appreciated, payment is usually done by online transfers which reduces admin time, and the busy clients I work for are happy with a person they can email with queries. The gardens range in size from 5x5 all the way up to 1/2 acre or so, semi rural and town.
My site ranks fairly well in web searches and I am pleased with the way it is going.
I dont get any work from the internet and i dont need it. I have a website but its rubbish, i got it for free and is only there in case i need it in the future ( i liked the domain name).
60 % ?
Very low percentage this year but that's because I haven't spent the time on it. Reason being like Andrew said above we were just getting the wrong sort of work last year! Over the winter I'm going to look at the website and try and see if I can improve on it ready for Spring 2012
Referrals have been good for us this year and also the directories. Oddly enough, July has been a good month for picking up work, almost gave up on the gardens by end June because we were struggling against fierce competition and I just would not work for nothing as I have done before but I think some of the cheap and cheerful brigade are running out of steam/are fully booked.
It works very well for us.
