A heatwave is predicted for the summer of 2009

You might or might not be pleased to hear that this summer is predicted to be a heatwave and the fifth warmest on record. With warm weather brings many challenges for a gardener or anyone who runs a gardening of landscaping business. For the employer there is a possibility that a hot Friday or Monday will bring the dreaded telephone call from an employee telling you that they have developed twenty four hour flu - coincidently, the temperature outside tops the temperature gauge as not a single cloud is seen in the sky. Watering of newly planted shrubs, trees and shrubs poses logistical challenges and can lead to losses. Watering of vegetables can lead to failures if hose pipe bans or restrictions are put into place. Lawns and community sports pitches suffer badly and the grass all but disappears as roots whither and become shallow with leaf blades drying right out. If the financial situation is not enough to contend with, stressed business owners will have to consider a further contingency when planning and scheduling work. The only consolation I suppose is that drier weather will mean that if work is in hand, water-logging or wash-out's will not be an issue. Any thoughts on what a dry summer will do for you?

  • Heat and Dry are 2 words not often banded around up here so I would relish a well-behaved Summer! That's the truth!
  • Irrigation restrictions for golf courses, those that have not planned contingencies will be caught out as usual. However an good opportunity to stress out more Poa annua!
