A great bit of bartering Martin; I guess the acid test is to give it a go and see what it returns - make sure you charge an extra 14.75p an hour to cover the cost lol :-o)
  • One thing you'll find out... if you ever leave them, don't renew the ad or decide not to go for it, you'll get phone call after phone call, literally 2-3 a day.

I ended up having to write letters to trading standards and their directors to stop the pestering sales calls.
  • You can't whack a bit of haggling. Top marks.
I used to use the YP book but no longer bother as I simply didn't get enough enquiries. Paid a similar amount to yourself and had I think, 2 jobs from it. This turned me off using yell.com and paying for it.
My own personal experience has been that many people just use the internet or local/parish type mags or referral.
Not sure what others think but most people without the internet are in their twilight years and unfortunately only have a very small budget.
You can have an internet listing with Yell.com for free minus a web link of course...
  • i have free listing for 2-3 years and get some jobs from it.

i WILL NEVER PAY FOR BT AGAIN. YELLOW PAGES OR YELL.COM

sorry but £300 after profit not worth it to me.

people think you are expensive if your ad is at the top, esp in a recession.....................never say 'never but..

think before you jump !! you can always cancel within 21 days?
  • flyers for £100 for 10,000 and £30 for 2k door drop .

just got a call from some flyers my mate put out a month ago on a newish estate- possible £1200 job...........
  • Good on you for the haggling. I must admit I have tried both Yell & BT in the past, BT was much better - more enquiries and better staff.

Yell can be a nightmare - I tell them now that my business is so good I don't need to advertise!!!!
  • Cheers for all the advise.

The sales people are I agree a total nightmare.

I will let you know if it pays off or not.
  • I track all of our enquiries and can categorically state that most publications and online directories are a waste of space and time, there are few exceptions and Yell is not one of them.

On the Mail website today - Yellow Pages 'clogging up landfills and recycling bins' as consumers switch to the internet

  • I have been in Yellow Pages for the last 6 years (quarter column in colour) and Yell.com for the last 2 years. I saw their rep last week and have cancelled my Yellow Pages advert altogether as I did not get one job from them last year. I have taken out a sponsored link on Yell.com as I was getting inquiries for them last year, however I am monitoring this very closely as I will not be renewing this next year if it doesn't work.

I think the business networking group I joined last year (BNI) is going to be far more profitable at a fraction of the cost.
