  • I ALWAYS specify spun and not woven. My own view is that woven seems to break down more easily with exposure to sunlight as well looking awful when it frays (and it always does). Landscapers tell me they hate planting through woven as well. I am aware that spun takes a little longer to drain away but this is the only downside as far as I am concerned.
  • I agree, spun and not woven! I have been using woven recently as I have been getting it at the favourable price of £40 for a 1mx100m roll (1 roll order). My own view is that woven is a nightmare to cut with scissors, looks awful when it frays, sometimes has a nice green 'tartan' pattern all over it and has a 'sheen' on it which makes mulches slide off it when used on gradients. All I need to do now is source cheap spun fabic!

    Any ideas where from?
  • i use fabric / cheap if customer wants cheap job , but

primarily use the spun/ card -like is the best description mainly , its easy to cut round plants or shapes...

but driveways use the drive /woven as that is what it is for , ive also just used a large roll under 7 tonnes cotswolde gravel as it will last longer if covered, it stabilises the ground and is stronger.

correct if this is used on banks or uneven parts bark. slate or gravel will fall/slide down !!

landscapes -direct on google ...sometimes have offers which is when i mostly buy .

always use plastic pegs £8.95 for 100 - add it into costs........worth Every penny and more as it holds the fabric down secure 4'' deep.- use a plastic /rubber block paving mallet to bang in -depending on ground . but u wont get them out if not in properly ( pilot a hole first with a metal spike/old screwdriver first).
  • When I noticed the question "woven or spun" I'd straight away say woven (terram or lotrack woven nylon stuff) because to me the stuff from B&Q is spun and genuinely is cheap. Where I've seen it used it doesn't keep the weeds down after 18months. I presume the spun stuff Robin speaks of from landscapes-direct is better quality. I'll check it out.

Agree with Pro Guard. Landscape fabrics are a nightmare to work with once installed. I will always try and steer customers away from using them!

will always create using a compacted sub base of type

i agree , but how much does that cost. its not posible on smaller areas where wacker cannot get or will destroy everything around. gravel is an efficient way and costs for west-midlands customers is affordable.
-at least its natural and allows some sort of run-off (unlike slabs etc).
i use cotswold creamy stone mostly now and its a good (light in colour)hard stone...............

i think using mot underneath might in-fact stop any worms etc from being able to live !!

thats rather a 'builders' mentality i think ;-) .i think we finally dis-agree on something paul lol :-)
  • i would rather rip-up weed fabric , than have to dig out tonnes of sub-base / or crush & run mixed in the ground if i was reviving an area to soil for planting !!!!!!

but i loath that green netting stuff in turf/ground !!!!!!!!! what a nightmare on forks and digger buckets......
  • This is something I have always wondered about. I generally use the woven fabric but have found that bulbs can push their way through. I know you can get different grades of spun membrane and have seen the heavy weight ones used as ground stabilisation under roads and drives.

Clive, what is the woven membrane intended for?
  • they 3 or 4 types are each for a specific pupose
    1.weed barrier
    2.ground/drive stabilisation
    3.under decking/paths

different weights 60gram 90 gram 100 gram - all different prices and size rolls........1m wide 1.5 meter wide 2.2
rolls of 25m 50m or 100m in each type. ground pegs can be used with all types of geotextiles.
