I think a scythe has it's place definitely. It's the best tool for windrowing tall grass for collection.
I have my own scythe but I can't pick up the technique to use one well enough to consider using it commercially though....there is a nack to it!
I agree, it has a role to play but not in situations where the blade would hit obstacles and get damaged.
I hope the young lady isn't on piece-work!

The scythe is like the Longbow and the Strimmer is like the crossbow. The longbow might be more effective in certain circumstances but for utilitarian use and for use of learning to use it the crossbow won out in the end.
It's much more satisfying using a scythe, I have a hand scythe and use it from time to time.
I've used a scythe on my allotment - On long, DRY and I mean BONE dry grass is is actually faster than a strimmer and leaves it in a row -
Wet grass, dont bother it sticks and covers the blade.
leafy/other weed grass areas 0 slower.
Stone = useless as the blades are SO SO thin at the cutting edge they loose all cutting ability on contact with wood or stone.
To me, its a once a year tool when the right job comes along.
