When is a Stihl NOT a Stihl ?

I was browsing fleabay earlier and came accross a listing offering a Stihl MS380 chainsaw for the bargain price of £295!

As far as I am aware the MS380 is not available in the UK and straight away Chinese Copy sprung to mind.

The listing states

9 Available / 1 sold

you are bidding on a brand new never used  stihl  chain saw with a 25"   guide bar

We are importers of this quality product why pay shop prices when we can deliver in 7/10 days

Now I'm not saying that this is a counterfeit item as untill the product is viewed and a serial number is checked and verified we have no way of knowing.

However a quick search on the net found numerous companies in China offering Stihl labelled products for sale at very low prices.

China Wholesale Stihl Products

With so many cheap copies flooding the market it really is a case of buyer beware and another good reason to buy from a registered dealer.

It does make one wonder how many of these machines are around.

    Marc,

Both Stihl (http://www.stihl.co.uk/stihl-warns-about-imitations.aspx) and Trading Standards have identified and warned about this type of issue.

It's happening a lot, not only just for Stihl - which is worrying.

The old sayings, "if it looks too good, it probably is...." & "Buyer beware" spring to mind

Shame Stihl are not on LJN to help educate their professional contractors on what to look out for....

  • I visited a local car boot sale a couple of weeks ago and noticed some fake huskis being sold by our friends from the emerald isle. I think the manufactures and authorities ought to pull their fingers out and start making life difficult for these people .

I totally agree, but while there are people to willing to buy 'cheap' there will always be a grey/black market for such items.

I expect the same people who buy them cheap will be the first to complain and expect all their statuoary rights when the item fails or injures someone.

There is a big difference from buying a bargin and buying something dirt/too cheap.....

If dirt/too cheap and you don't know the seller then surely alarm bells should be ringing as it's either 'suspect', 'stolen' or 'fake'....

Found the item on eBay and what is interesting is the picture shown on eBay is the same as the one used on the Stihl website to show the difference between and pukka chainsaw and a counterfeit one. Take a close look !!!

Even the spelling on the lower chainsaw is not correct !!!!!!

They are being sold by a female from a residential address....

Would think Trading Standards would be very interested.

  • I think they would be too Gary.

I feel sorry for whoever purchased the one sold as £300 is a waste if it is non genuine.

As Briggsandscrapem mentioned those pesky Huskies are also available too and not that cheap either.

    Husky Plop

@ Gary, thanks for the link Gary, I think I'll drop Stihl UK an e-mail, at least they can investigate, well, in theory.

It makes my blood boil really because we the consumer are the ones being ripped off.

Perhaps an opportunity to link Stihl email back to this LJN Thread ?  - perhaps show them who we are and how beneficial it would be to them to participate ;-)

  • i would never buy an imported chainsaw, . stihl are making products in the us.
  • I agree with you 100%. I just wouldn't feel confident in buying expensive machinery off the internet. I like to see what I'm buying!
