  • Ilex glabra? I think, certainly looks like one of the holly family, but could be wrong
  • inkberry ... looks like it
  • Could possibly be some variety of Pittosporum tennuifolium? It's a little diificult to tell from the picture. How old are the plants and can you get a closer picture of the leaves?
  • holly ? flat leaved ? trunk/stems and growth look like it ??
  • ILEX crenata 'Chesapeake'

  • That Ilex Crenata 'Chesapeake' looks most like it .. though this one really is as dark as it looks in the photo .... Which is the point ... I need to replace a dead one of these and it must look the same. ...

I actually didn't pick it for a holly when i saw it at first ....
  • thanks so much Steve ... this is good info... I've looked it up and black root rot seems to be the major issue and I think in this case will be the problem as there is no above ground signs of disease that I've seen. .. will have to disinfect the pot I'm replacing it in. ... and will be getting something else interesting

    Hi Daniel,
I have had a look at the photo a couple of times, can't really make out the leaf, but I'm thinking Ilex JC van Tol as it looks bigger than I Crenata and glossy.

A close up of the leaf would be really helpful.

If it is Ilex crenata, there is a current disease problem with it, so that may have caused the failure with the existing one. We stopped stocking the plant last year when we were advised by Defra of the problems.

Also if it is Ilex crenata be careful when selecting a replacement due to the current issues with the plant.

    regards,

    Steve
  • hi daniel i think yours is darker as it looks like its in heavy shade
