VAN? PICK UP? VAN? CAR?

Without going into the full background , I basically found my main bulk of work is 40 miles away, but I still have some locally, all going OK, until my Van ( Vivaro SWB) developed a one drop a week OIL "leak" I'm a bit depressed by this, though my trusted mechanic assures me it's nothing major - BUT, I can't arrive at places and driveways ( as I have found 3 or 4 times since) dropping oil on their drives.

Plus, my car has ended up almost forgotten at my ex wifes. So I have 2 lots of tax and insurance to pay.

So, my cunning plan ( such as it is ) was to ditch/PX both the van AND the car and get a pick up with room in the rear for baby - plus also a tow bar and trailer.

So this leads me to what Pick up? Of course money being no object it would be a Ranger, Hi Lux, L200 in that order......so have decided on a Navara.

Persuade me I shouldn't do this :-)

  • Isn't it easier just to park the van on the road?

At least one of my clients has a pavered drive,at the end of a private narrow gravely road,50 yards from a busy main road.

Also, my own drive/garage is annoyingly a rented property, so every time I park here I have to get a sheet of cardboard out to shove under the engine - I think on balance, getting shot of leaky van is better

What is the cause of the oil leak? Could it not just be fixed?

I have a Ranger, and find it's too restrictive to work from compared to a van. Great for quoting and driving around and doing a bit of spraying or fertilising, but hard work when any machinery or large tools required eg mowers / stimmers. It's too high for loading, and with a hardtop needed for security, machine handles are too long, or you're always folding.

If I had to have dual use I'd go for a crew cab vivaro or transit custom and avoid trailer.

With a trailer you'll end up parking on thje street a lot anyway due to limited turning / access, so you'll be no better off in reality. Plus it or contents likely to go walkies at some point.

If you stick with pick-up truck, defender 130 with hi-top canopy good, but latest Ranger is very nice.

I don't know, I took it in for that purpose and that's what I was hoping, but he said it would be OK as I'm not doing hundreds of miles -he did not think it was serious - he is good and very well trusted.

But the leak is just one factor to be honest the other being the 2 vehicle/baby thing. Having them parked 40 miles apart etc - becoming costly, time consuming and irksome.

I've just had a new navara and love it with all the open back problems I'm lucky that most of my clients are either on long drives/electric gates or just miw and go jobs if at a street address I just have to take it all off the truck if there for any period of time.
One plus is it makes you put all stuff away safe at night as you can't leave it like a van.
I have it so I don't have to have 3 cars. 1 for my work 1 for wife to get to work(Citroenc1) and something big enough for family trips

I do have access to lots of storage for things I'm not using regular ( like the Chipper,Leaf Collector,Scarifier,Danarm, and my Fencing kit ) - So I do tend to travel light - for e.g. I have Honda Versatool, with edger, strimmer, brush cutter, hedge trimmer and pole ext. I carry far more than I need at times....loads of tool boxes for one and a big ol Pick Axe....cos you just never know.

  • all depends on budget i guess? what budget do you have?

i have this and another 4x4 as a back up vehicle will be getting a transit tipper next year to.

I use a little combo van, and a toy car (four seater convertible) I have a low mileage insurance on the car as it only really gets used at weekends. I tried a twin cab pickup which I loved but theft and trailer insurance was a bugger. It works out (just) cheaper to run as I am than having one multi purpose vehicle. Also o got fed up with having to clean it out every time we went anywhere non work related! It's amazing the amount of crap that appears in the cab! I swear it's not all mine, there's a litter fairy somewhere filling my cab with old coffee mugs, receipts and general debris!
