I'm thinking Cotoneaster lacteus. Are there any berries?

  • Not a Cotoneaster Phil, it was too tall and the leaves weren't 'glossy' enough to be Cotoneaster, also no berries on it.

  • I think you may be correct, possibly Frangula alnus? (photo below), although its leaves seem to be more rounded where as this one has oval to elliptic foliage.

To long and thin for hazel, possibly buckthorn at a guess?
  • It doesnt technically have to native there are so many species of trees and plants in the uk which have been imported and spead in the wild ? just a suggestion

Was that type of tree by itself or was there more of it ?

  • Only the one tree growing right in amongst mature oak, beech, sycamore etc so its obviously very shade tolerant, it had fallen over the wind but has still survived although it had a lot of dead wood and not much foliage, certainly no berries.

  • Nothofagus nervosa/alpina or Rauli?

  • I dont think so, the veins on a Nothofagus are more prominent.
