Tiny hole in my mowers fuel cap?

Just recently bought a mount field empress 16 and when i started it up fuel was splurting out of this tiny hole on top of the fuel cap? Is this meant to be there as an air vent? Or have I bought a dodgy mower!? Any info would be great!Cheers

Hi, yes the hole is meant to be there as a vent / breather for the fuel tank, try loosening the fuel cap slightly, don't do it up super tight, it's a bit like a take away coffee, cover up the mouth peice and the breather hole and shake cup and latte will spurt out everywhere, hope that helps...
    • Yup makes sense now! Thanks very much!
    • Harry, why on earth did you try that on a latte?? :-)

  • you are right in the breather hole but it should be a one way valve and not let petrol out a potential fire hazard

  • Mountfield Empress 16" - fitted with either a Briggs and Stratton or Tecumseh engine depending on model year, although an older one I had was retrofitted with a Honda GV100 engine.

You should not be able to see through the hole in the cap and fuel should definitely not be able to leak out - using it in this condition will spread petrol over your customers lawns destroying tiny spots of it for a considerable period of time.

My guess is the inside of the fuel cap is missing, on older Briggs engines there was often a cork disc that covered these holes, newer ones have a rubber insert with one way valve.

Certainly don't use as it is - dangerous, potential fire hazard and bad for the environment (petrol leak). Find and fit a replacement fuel cap ASAP.

Take cap to your local dealers and get a new one - issue solved.
