Tailored weather forecasts for LJN members

I've had a suggestion from a member that having a regional weather forecasting packaged embedded within LJN would be a good idea to assist businesses in planning their schedules. I've conducted a few enquires via a few members but I thought it better now to open this up for site-wide opinion. As you can see from the costings, there is a significant investment needed in the service so I don't want to take this decision lightly. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

  • Hi Phil,

What are the benefits versus a link to BBC weather? Is there a greater regional accuracy/more regular updates etc etc ?
  • I use the met office site, - www.metoffice.gov.uk - it has local sections and i've found it the most accurate possible, - this works well for me, so I wouldn't look at something on this site.
  • Hi

At Phils' suggestion I have signed up to field any enquiries relating to the Netweather forecasts and how we believe they will help you in your day to day decision making.

Compared to the BBC and the Met Office, we are also able to provide specific forecasts down to post code level, these include soil temperature and moisture at various depths, projected rainfall in mm, as well as the more traditional temperature, outlook, wind speed etc.

Having this available on LJN adds to the value of being a member, meaning a single site visit, rather than jumping to new sites to gather information.
  • I can see the logic of having a weather feed to the site. However, there are so many weather sites we can access for free, I'm not sure it's worth the expence to LJN. The main things we need to know is will it be raining, is there going to be a frost. All the longer term trends such as soil temp or general weather are either not accurate enough or we know anyway because we are out there every day experiencing it first hand.
  • I use the Met office for an over view and http://www.raintoday.co.uk/ to see what is on it's way to me short term..the rest of the time I just get wet of get on with it ;-)

I can see it might help others but It should be included to LJN at minimal cost or for free...then the weather site could make it's money by offering an upgraded service or an APP for your phone. If it's good enough people would invest the extra and LJN would be the portal for their business.

    Cheers
    Mark
  • Would they be anymore reliable than any others?
  • I like the concept Phil.
  • Thanks for the feedback. We aim to be more accurate and more location specific at a glance than the mainline sites such as the Met Office and BBC.

We can't change the weather, but by putting detailed weather on LJN we can save you time and over time you will be the judge of how accurate our forecasts are. As for the costs, we try very hard to make sure that we deliver the best value for money in our market, but I'll let Phil decide whether to share the quoted price with you.

Let us know if you need any more information

  • It's an idea Dave, but just getting it online takes work for both us and LJN upfront. It's a weak analogy, but it would be like asking to have a lawn reseeded and only paying once it needed mowing ;-)

I'm off for a break from tonight, but I'll get the ball rolling to see if we can come up with a deal that makes the decision as risk free as possible.

Micropayments would be ideal here Ian so that a LJN member only gets charged when they call on the page(s) they need.

What we need to determine first though is that your service is going to be of a greater benefit than other (free) services previously mentioned.
