  • Are you using for post holes or planting? What size auger bit?

  • Post holes and don't know yet which size should I purchase it's for concrete posts
  • For concrete slotted or recessed posts you are going to need a 200mm bit minimum. Thats only going to give you 40-50mm either side of post for concrete.

The two man augers give you a 250mm diameter bit.

Personally i've never got one with them.

  • Just thinking as I work alone alot could be handy
  • Whilst they wont make a hole big enough in one pass they will give you a deep hole 200mm which then will be very fast and easy to square off a bit bigger.

The one big headache with augers are roots they just don't handle them at all and therefore are useless near trees or near large hedges.

  • Hmmm okay what about old privet hedges that have been taken out

But my main concern is the area I live in is very clay dense will they work in clay
  • they work beautifully in clay because it holds together and the sides of the hole dont collapse but if its real sticky stuff it may not have the guts to get through it in one pass. also you may end up having to scrape the clay off.

In reality the real sticky clay is usually a foot down anyway.

If you do stacks of fencing they are probably worth it but they will be useless on perhaps a third of holes you try with it.

  • Very fast to use, but as said by Simon terrible in around roots, get a Mutt or similar bladed post bar to cut roots off as you encounter them and the machine should do you proud. However unless you do a lot of fence work I would hire as opposed to buying. That said we have a chinese clone of these machines that we bought for under £200 with three augers 100mm, 150mm, and 200mm. It will handle hedge type roots of minimal diameter but may need two passes or more down the hole to be efffective.

There was a row of trees here we took down so lots of roots to contend with! The engine on this is a 58cc and we have used it in clay and loamy soils equally well. It does take a bit of practice and can be a tad bouncy if it meets rocks.
