Stihl HS82 engine gone

I'm told by my repair shop that my HS82 needs a new top end, which I believe is cylinder head and piston/hinge on pin.

I've been quoted £330 which seems hugely excessive on a £560 machine when the blades are now very near £200 too.

anyone have experience of such a repair on a stihl machine?

they think I've run it on fuel without enough oil which is a bit of a bigger :(

  • That really is a ridiculous price.... the actual parts cost £68.03 which seems remarkably cheap for Stihl.... thats the retail price and they probably get them cheaper   The part number is 4237 020 1202 ... lsengineers have got it in stock     If you know what you're doing, you'd get it done in a couple of hours max...... why not have a go yourself?

Looking at this from the other side of the coin...

Investigate non start hedgtrimmer - 1 hr (£50)

Barrel and piston kit, spark plug, gaskets, drain old fuel etc - fill new fuel - £100

Labour and set up carb etc (has to be done after a rebuild usually) - £150...

Add VAT at 20% - you can see where the price comes from!

Most mower shops run at £40-£50 an hour on labour and they are going to be wanting to make at least 50% profit on the parts....

Everyone says gardeners can't work for nothing, neither can repair shops...

👆👆You can tell who runs a business 👍👍

      • I'd say if you can save some £250 for a couple of hours work, that's a pretty good way to run a business. There's also a certain satisfaction in doing these things yourself.  As Sam says.... its pretty easy stuff and if you don't try something new, you never learn anything.    Now we know that replacing the crankshaft is included in the £330, the price doesn't seem so unreasonable...... roughly £230 for all the bits..............  though since I enjoy these sort of jobs, I'd still do it myself, particularly this time of year when things are quieter.

.... but one is not saving £250 in this case unless I've misunderstood ?

My comments related to a sensible and pragmatic breakdown of the likely costs by Adam. We are all part of and business eco-system, so when there's fewer and fewer Service Dealers around the industry will suffer.

How many would prefer to be out working using that "time", or at least not spending an evening their own time with a hedgertrimmer in bits on a kitchen table but if one has spare time or is not busy - fair point.

However, I see most businesses are very busy at the moment given the weather and tend to work full time throughout the year.

Although we mostly service and maintain our machines in house (one of our staff is paid to do so out of normal operation hours) we wouldn't usually task them with this as it is far too time consuming and would write the machine off or keep for spares. This is especially true if the blades on such a machine need replacing.

Respect to you for admitting you've fook up.

There price is justified, with over head's etc.

I find with my dealer the parts are cheaper than l&s.

You may find, If you have a good relationship with your dealer they may give you a good deal on parts and some advice on how to go about it. YouTube is always good. With exception of Chinese carbs I always get my parts from the dealer.

As the parts manager at my dealer says: 'its the labour that kills it"

  • Been back into the dealer today to run through options.

found out near the end that it also needs a crankshaft £110.

I said you can stop there now, that alone justifies the price. Had a good look at blades too, and they are close to finished. Machine is 4yrs old and had some hammer.

time for a new one, £230 more than repair but includes blades which now cost £175. No brainier, keep for repairs.

alas we moved house last year so Taxanuary was a financial killer. Can't justify a new one from cash flow for a couple of months. Thankfully I have a spare HS82

    • That price certainly makes a lot more sense now...... replacing the crankshaft involves significantly more work.  You're right to scrap the thing. Might be worth sticking it on Ebay for spares or repair though  I'd be honest about the damage but you might be surprised what you get for it.

      • Good call, not a lot of use to me as it is. Got a chainsaw in similar state too
