Stihl Blower Exhaust

I have an about 8 year old Stihl handheld. Can't remember which BG - it's rubbed off !.The silencer appears to be in one piece but I am wondering if the two halves of the casing come apart & if there is a spark arrestor in there somewhere.Anyone know ?

  • Something is rattling !. It is so annoying that Stihl part diagrams, manuals etc are so closely guarded especially when one is in a country where the dealers are useless.

  • Had the same issue last year with an old FS55 strimmer, could'nt see anyway of taking apart the exhaust but just assumed corosion had caused a failure internally. bought a replacement and that cured it.
According to the manual i have, there is a spark arrestor screen in the exhaust and it can be inspected and replaced but apparently only by a Stihl dealer, and thus they give no instructions on how to do it!

  • It's a 2003 SH 85 - I found the manual !. It could even have a CAT. I haven't got around to taking it off & giving it a shake etc. Isn't it weird how you can put your ear close to a machine & still can't tell where the rattle is. I may have to resort to the old using a screwdriver as a stethoscope trick.

I used to have a Husky Combi - first one on the market & years ahead of Stihl. That has a screen on the outside of the silencer that was easy to remove & clean.

We need a Stihl spy - we know you are out there, who will put some manuals online.

Peter, go check your email....you should have what you are wishing for

There are 3 different mufflers listed. Only the US/CAN models appear to have a CAT & replacable spark arrested on exhaust outlet. Other than that they are one piece...
  • Many thanks. I was trying to imagine a join !.
