Hi we chuck chilli powder onto the bulbs before filling in soil, rather than sprinkling on top of the soil where would probably disappear pretty quickly - so squirrels get unpleasant surprise if they dig down! Seems to work, both in the borders and in pots, but who knows?? Have used this method for last 2 or 3 years and reasonable result in most gardens I think.
Best place - any Asian shop where you can buy large cheap bags of the stuff! Depends where you live of course, but it's easy round here (West London). Could set up a mail order arrangement I suppose :)
