we sometimes have this problem and it was a worthwhile investment getting a generator to give us flexibility for clients that are out etc. I went through a few different models till i got it right! My advice is go for one that is portable, but has a bigger capacity than you think you will need, because when you plug something in and it goes at a snails pace you wont be impressed! My other advice is get a honda one, they are bomb proof. Ive got a second hand one we bought off of a bouncy castle guy, so it hadnt been overworked. Its done us proud for three years and it means we have power to run our log saw etc in our yard.

Have been looking at various Honda models but they all seem to cost a lot more than many others out there, Reliability comes at a price, hopefully somebody might recommend one that's cheaper, if not quite as bomb proof!
It's that old chestnut of wondering how much to shell out for kit that might only be used infrequently, or might not.
Otherwise I have just purchased an evo power engine which can house a generator unit/pressure washer/water pump. I have only just out it together so I can't say if it is any good or not yet. It was/is very well priced though!!
I got a Wolf ex demo (like new) on ebay from ukhomeshopping it has big wheels and handles so is very flexible had it a couple of years runs my 2200w 9"grinder fine but stalls with my 1650w compressor (inductive load) some screws where a little lose & one mounting is perishing but not a problem very pleased overall at price paid
Honda all the way - I know people that have used/abused Honda generators for years - some of which are well over 25 years old and still running fine. Many of these have been scarcely ever serviced and regularly dropped, bashed and subjected to the worst abuse that the building site can throw at them. They generally only see the repair shop when they fail to start or stop due to the low oil level cut out cutting the spark!!
It says a lot that my local mower shop has a heap of scrap 'non Honda' generators - mainly scrapped due to electrical component failure and a total lack of spare parts/ back up from the manufacturer...
I am currently using a 2.2 KW Honda generator set on a personal building project - on/off/on/off all day and it still starts first pull every time.
