Renovating an overgrown beech hedge

Hi All,

I need to do some work on a very overgrown beech hedge. I understand that the plants should be dormant before lopping a third of the height off. I've heard of one or two nurseries delaying delivery of rootball stock due to the warm autumn and was wondering if it might still be too early to have a go at this beech hedge. Thoughts welcome.

  • I wouldn't do it until the worst of the winter weather is over, late Feb maybe?

  • Hi John

Agree if you can probably best left till Feb.  I hard pruned a large Beech hedge prior to Christmas over the last two winters. Though snow fell within a week of cutting the first time it responded very well. Last year I cut it during freezing conditions and again it was not adversely affected. Temperatures got down to -16 C

  • Thanks for the advice. So if I had someone who was determined to prune now, sounds like my advice should be not to prune too aggressively  or best wait to late Feb and reduce by half at that point? Seems like the key issue is dormancy and exposure of wounds to extreme conditions.
