Rear discharge mower 21”

One of my jobs I currently mulch, which works well, the area is too big and awkward to collect, but with the wetter weather coming soon im thinking I could do to get a machine that can rear discharge, and leave a fairly decent finish, spread the cuttings evenly rather than in big clumps, I'll be cutting weekly, would like to know what others use for this kind of work? I often see the verges along the roads being cut this way, but never seem to clock what mowers there using, must be 21" and self propelled, and be capable in with wet grass, only a weeks worth of growth cheers

Side discharge, yes.... rear, surely you'll get covered in clippings?

I had an old Hayter side discharge, it was excellent - that said I have no idea what is top of the pops now

    • Side discharge leave a big line of grass clumps from my experience, needs to be a better finish than that, as long as the flap on rear discharge isn't fully open, shouldn't get caked in it.

  • We use Honda HRX537 Hy which we have primarily for mulching and collection but they do leave a reasonable finish when rear discharging  as they have two blades so the cuttings are fairly well smashed up .

      Hi Peter

I purchased one of these off of recommendations on here back in late spring. Needed a mower that was quick, mulched and collected. Nice and easy with the versa mow lever.

Started off pleased with the mower was doing what I wanted to but recently it has slowed in pace so some adjustments are needed but what I'm disappointed in is the finish when mulching.

Like I say started of fairly well and leaved a reasonable finsh but of late the mulching has been poor, almost looks like it is cutting and dropping without mulching it up. Scratching my head as to why. Perhaps the blades are a little dull is all I can think off.

Wondering if you have any ideas in what the problem could be?

        If you don't mind Peter....

Because of the spring like conditions all year the grass is a pig! Normal summer it's a dream now we're into autumn dew.

      • James, check out the blades, almost sounds like only one blade is working? We always run the back wheels one notch higher than the front,  ours are set with the back on number 3 and depending on the job the front on 2 or 1.5, the only time this is altered is when we mulch leaves in the Autumn so the back is permanently on setting 3. This season has been very difficult with wet sappy grass which doesn't help mulching with the grass clinging to the underside of the deck which if not cleaned off regularly sets like concrete when the mower is not used and will affect performance, you may be doing all mentioned in this post, if not give things suggested a try and let me know.

As others have mentioned councils use Scag or Ferris mowers for verges but to justify the cost you need a lot of work!

          Thanks Peter

I have been running back wheels higher and both blades are spinning properly.

Had some time over the weekend so have given it a Good clean and blades have been sharpend, initial thoughts are that this has helped.

I will be buying a new set of blades for it soon, a little disappointed that they haven't lasted very long compared to the weibang blades that this mower replaced.

I have also adjusted the drive speed and it is now running like it did when I brought it which is good. So in all the mower is back in my good books, although I cocked up and In between flipping the mower over and starting it I adjusted the wrong nut and snapped the bolt on the throttle cable. It still works just have to stall the engine to stop it. Looks like a simple replacement after watching a YouTube video but these things rarely are in reality.

          Thanks

    • I keep getting drawn to these machines, I bought a used one a couple of years ago, but had a few problems with it straight away, didn't get chance to really use it and got shut as spares or repairs, maybe it's time to try one again, suppose you could always have it on half mulch half rear discharge? Is this something you ever do?

  • i would have thort council/highwaws contractors wou be using somthing like scag mowers

    • There's a few around my area that use small pedestrian mowers, definitely no bigger than 21", on the local industrial sites/petrol stations and also some of the grass verged areas, I'll pull over next time I see them and have a chat, last time it was throwing it down with rain, he wasn't collecting and it looked like a decent enough finish, granted it wasn't overley long, but still.
