Hello there,

I recently posted a number of times, as i'm in the planning stage of starting a fencing contractor business.

I've noticed a lot of my competition offer a wide range of fencing services, and things like security fencing and metal railings I haven't ever put up. I remember a few years ago when I was running my landscaping business, I used to quote for pretty much anything, regardless of whether I knew how to do it, and got myself into a number of tight spaces when quoting for jobs like victorian tiling at london townhouses. Which in hindsight i shouldnt have been quoting for at all, as i understand its quite a specialist job.

I'm certain that with some basic instruction, I could put up a number of other fences and barriers, but i've just never had the opportunity and I feel that I could potentially lose out on work/contracts If im not offering basic fences purely based on the fact i've never had to do them while I was landscaping.

What are your thoughts on this?

  • Theres nothing wrong with advertising for a broad spectrum of work despite whether you have or not done it, If for instance a client asks you to install a hot tub for instance, lets say you have never done that sort of work, why not partner up with a company that does that sort of work and simply ask them for some sort of commission for passing the job on that way you complete the job in theory for your customer you get paid some commission and the contractor gets payed for the job and everyone is happy with the outcome. but i would advise targeting the clients you can complete the job in confidence but have a list of other companies that can complete the more complex job for you, if your not 100% sure you could do them ?
