    Good idea Roger

I watched Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's channel 4 programme last night and I was appalled and anguished to see so many dead fish being thrown back in to the sea - it was claimed there was the same amount of fish (by weight) that is discarded to the seagulls as is kept to be sold to eat in British supermarkets - all because Europe has decrred that certain fish cannot make up part of the quota,

    All very edible fish!

  • 326,008 signatures when I looked just now.  It's grown by about 100,000 this afternoon.  Couldn't get to the site last night after the TV prog probably because it was so busy.  We could bump that up by another 1,674 as things stand right now.
  • Good man !!

  • Well done Roger - ridiculous fishing policy coupled with unsustainable fishing methods have decimated our fish stocks, and the government must take action now, before it is too late. The sea is one of our most precious natural resources, but like all natural resources, we have to treat them with respect if we want to continue to reap their benefits.

So if you haven't already, I urge you all to sign up. And remember that we, as consumers, have a major responsibility too. Be a bit more adventurous with your fishy choices. It's good for the fish, good for the economy, and good for your tastebuds too.

  • I have signed up.

I heard about the campain a week or so ago, hugh was being interviewd, but i didnt know where to go, glad you posted this so i could sign up!

  • signed up too its ridiculous the amount of wasted fish

fish mongers buying cod from scotland when its beeing discarded in there local sea

and governments use the word discard as if it makes some sort of sense and has to happen

not only is it discard its waste of good food and ridiculous but then the governments don't do common sense...

  • Good to see so many people saying that the EU is a complete waste of space. It serves absolutely no purpose apart from employing lots of washed up MPs...there are a few "good uns" but they are the exception to the rule.

I'm not sure I understand this properly. Is it that certain fish cannot make up part of the quota, because that would lead to overfishing? Shouldn't those fish not be killed in the first place because they are endangered or something? Could someone explain?

    Thanks,

    Jen

  • Probably easier if you read this rather than for me to try to explain.
