  • There is an aggregates/ground works/plant hire company near me [Derbyshire] where I get my top soil from and they do a fantastic membrane. It is on a four metre roll attached to a wall and you just buy the amount you need [they pull it out and cut it for you]. Being 4m wide is far better as you can imagine. The main difference from all the regular types you get is that it is white and much thicker than the normal black stuff. It is the proper professional grade membrane. You can see that water will easily drain through and it isn’t plasticky or shiny but is a matt finish. I used it on a job about five years ago and there still aren’t any weeds coming through the stone/gravel. So I would check any local aggregates merchants and see if they do the thicker white membrane. As you buy it from these types of firms, it is also cheaper than buying it in a pre-packaged roll. Unfortunately, I don’t know what the make is. Someone might know and post it here.

Edit - This looks like the stuff here - https://www.sure-green.com/geotextile-membrane-fabric.html?gclid=Cj...

I would still see if I could get it from a local aggregates firm.

    • Thanks.  Local TP man showed me a 4m x 10m bundle of white non-woven geotextile but he was unsure whether it was just to seperate layers of sub base material or whether it has weed suppressing properties.

I cannot find it on their website though!

The white non woven material on the 4m wide roll is called Terram and its classed as a weed barrier membrane.Different grades such as Terram 1000. Its the only one i use for everything. Under paving and sub-bases, under gravel, under barkchip etc etc. I've even heard of it being used up against building foundations to stop tree roots. As said already, 4m wide roll is fantastic for saving on overlaps and when you cut it there is no fraying at the edges. Anywhere you need a weed suppressant then this in my view is the best product out there. Cost should be about £4 per linear metre off the roll which is £1perm2. If you use a lot buy a whole 100m roll. Works out then at £2-2.50 linear metre. Even at £1 per m2 its not a huge expense for any job.
