MicB - there is a book by Roger Phillips called "Trees in Britain, Europe and North America" which as far as I know is as good as you can get for identifying a tree from its leaves.
This one on Amazon I've LINKED TO HERE is the American version because it's got a "click to look inside" option (it's the same book) - scroll through until you get to the photos of individual leaves and you should see what I mean.
I had three copies of this book at one time, from car boots probably. Phillips' book in collaboration with Martyn Rix entitled "Shrubs" is another useful one.
