Plant ID

Please help if you can!

Had a very long day and mind has gone blank and I can't identify this plant. It's growing as a tree but I suspect it's a multi-stemmed shrub.

It has never flowered hence the confusion. It's has alternate leaves which are pinnate and simple. It almost looks like a large prunus.

Has anybody any ideas? I'd be very grateful!

  • Bit difficult without an image
  • Umm I've put two images on can't you see them?
  • could be bay chap _ Laurus nobilis

  • but then again

  • I know it's not easy with the photos but its definitely not a bay - the leaves have the same feel as beech if that helps at all

I'm guessing some variety of Amelanchier.

  • That was my first thought but the leaves are quite big roughly 10cm long which seemed too big for amelanchier. Are there any large leaved amelanchier?

    Many thanks

Image is out of focus, look up prunus Lusitanica or a continus? Pointed leaves are confusing
  • I would go with the prunus lusitanica too
  • MicB - there is a book by Roger Phillips called "Trees in Britain, Europe and North America" which as far as I know is as good as you can get for identifying a tree from its leaves.

This one on Amazon I've LINKED TO HERE is the American version because it's got a "click to look inside" option (it's the same book) - scroll through until you get to the photos of individual leaves and you should see what I mean.

I had three copies of this book at one time, from car boots probably. Phillips' book in collaboration with Martyn Rix entitled "Shrubs" is another useful one.
