Petrol chainsaws

hello all. People may have noticed that retailers have reduced their range of nasty smelly noisey petrol chainsaws. \Some have completely stop selling petrol. I may be a conspiracy theory nut ,but does it sound too far fetched to imagine that there is warehouses full of saws. With manufacturing date plates from 2015-2020 est. Surely the big name makers would reduce their prices just to off load these machines, that are unpopular now and may never be sold. but i dont want to spend £400ish mid range machine, on an item  that may be massively reduced in a year or two. Wishful thinking. How can an item hold its price so well in the last 5 years, while the public opinion on the environment has changed so much? Wish stihl and huq would have a clearance sale

  • With the high costs of storing items in warehouses these days, I think it unlikely. The battery saws are a good replacement up to about 18", but the bigger barred ones are only petrol at the moment. Maybe manufacturers are scrapping perfectly good saleable saws to meet environmental targets even. Or concentrating sales of the old stock in more developing type of countries

I did the Lantra Basic chainsaw maintenance and crosscutting course the first week of January 2022 and two lads arrived with brand new Stihl saws, they weren’t the saws they intended buy, they bought what they could, two saws their local dealer had in stock.

Without supplies of new saws the dealers are making the most of the opportunity to sell all their old stock.

  • billy . Interesting point about "developing" country market. I never thought of that. Thou, the mid range saw £400ish must become the £100 or below saw. The poor country population could never afford that high price. The same saw has 2 prices in reality .

I have my ground saw tickets also. Training centres are busy with students but different sources say the arb indusrty is understaffed . The cost of PPE and new good quality saws are a big investment that hold people back

  • there has been a supply problem in the last 2 years for pro machinery i think the latest models are at least 18 months overdue

I suspect the established businesses already working in the Arb industry will already have their petrol chainsaws of choice , Newbies may struggle to find new petrol machines .

Are the cordless models suitable for the job they do ?

My petrol stihl chainsaw has become redundant since purchasing a cordless chainsaw for ground work its very impressive but up a tree with the battery draining i wouldn't want to take the risk but i dont need to climb up tree's .

Some years back before cordless was popular my dealer had a big serious looking silky pruning saw in a case on his counter with the words '' Why buy a chainsaw when you can have a Silky ''

Perhaps there was a better profit margin on the silky at the time ?

  • Falling prices ?  My Stihl 020T is over 20 years old. I could sell it now for more than I paid for it.  A good battery saw is still very expensive when you add on the number of batteries you need to ensure a day's work.

  • More likely the saws on sale have been reduced due to lack of availability.  Shortages of all sorts of stuff atm.

  • God I love the smell of a chainsaw in the morning!!!
