When a pensioner asked you for discount you take a look at the lawn work out your price lets say £20.00 per cut and say to them well usually is would cost about £25.00 per cut but i'l do it for £20.00 co'z i'm feeling generous, that way you keep the price you need and you keep them happy as-well.

Do you have them, I have been asked a few times recently if I discount for Pensioners - What I reply is I offer a good value service for all my customers young and old.

I am with you on this one, I say my prices are very keen already and no scope to reduce. I had a chap the other week query a quote for lawncare, He lived way out in the country and I quoted £25 a treatment which included an element of travelling time and he said 'but Green Thumb will do it for £16.' I said well go with them. at this point he said he couldn't because he lived in the sticks and they didn't cover his area.
An explanation of economics and the need to make a profit fell on deaf ears. He was basing his £16 on the general advert that says from £16.
I've always had two prices. One for people who can pay, and one if I'm doing charity work or helping out a mate.
Pensioners are often far better off than people with mortgages and families to support, just look at the booming "silver" economy. I will not discount for the retired banker in a £2 million home just because he is a pensioner!
This came up a while ago on LJN, and I think almost all of us had a few deserving clients who we worked for at a low rate. Often down to them being old, kind and appreciative, but also clients who are handicapped, ill, struggling single parents, or otherwise genuinely needing help. There is no reason why we, or the state, should offer people discounts purely down to age. Would you offer Bernie Ecclestone or Mick Jagger a low rate just because of their age?
