New 48cm roller mower - options

Hi all,

I have been seeking a 2nd hand 48cm roller mower but nothing available and I need something quite soon. Was pondering Hayer 48 Pro but I know there are good options with Lawnflite, Danarm, etc. It's not easy knowing what to go for.

2nd hand market is not in my favour right now so I'm having to increase the budget for a new 48cm roller mower. Can anyone advise if there is a better (subjective I know!) comparable 48cm roller mower than a new Hayer Pro 48 (which is £900 approx). Pros and cons greatly appreciated!

Just to add that domestic small-medium lawn size mowing is a sideline to my main lawn care business but I want a pro level machine to be the main workhorse. Roller is a must.

Many thanks in advance for your insights.

  • If you can afford i would have a look at the 21 inch honda pro roller. cracking bit of kit and will last a while. when buying 2nd hand make sure the mower has all ways been serviced as this can cost £80+

  • I was brand loyal to Hayter for too long. Now I'm all Honda. For you I'd recommend an HRX476

  • Up until last year I'd always used either a Hayter or a Honda. Last summer I bought a new Weibang, the Legacy 48 Pro BBC, and I would say it's the best professional mower I've owned. Cost me just over £1000. It picks up better in the wet than any other canvas grass bag mower i've ever used and has a 3 year commercial warranty which I don't think any other company offers. It is heavy so won't be for everybody, but I have a small, light 18" Cobra roller mower with me too which I can use if I have a load of steps or the garden is tiny and awkward. Quite a few posts on here about the Weibang now as a fair few use them, worth a read at least. Best of luck with whatever you go for.

  • Thanks to all for your advice so far. Some great options! Hard to chose when I can only get one :). Was also recommended the Mountfield SSP505VR too - good spec and price. Time to get my thinking cap on and limit the budget or I will be adding on more and more!

Have used the Atco version of this mower, while it is better on collection than the Hayter, and has some really cool points like the twin clip blade and the quick adjust handles , the build quality isn't as sturdy as the Hayter. however, I've said it before, there is no point in having a pro grade machine like the Hayter that is useless in everyday working unless it's bone dry, personally I wouldn't go with the Hayter or the Honda, try a new brand, they are trying harder to please and are producing some great machines . Good luck
  • Everyone thinks differently here!!  One make that never seems to get a mention is the Masport Rotorola.................. light with a Honda engine for about £750. Not quite the same as mine which I've been using  for some 14 years doing several hours mowing a day during the Spring/Summer. and has never broken down.  A simple belt drive that just doesn't go wrong.  The B&S engine has just started to smoke on startup though i've a couple of spare engines in the garage I picked up on ebay for about £40 each. Might be worth looking at. .

    • I had a masport 5-6 years ago and I wouldn't buy another one. I don't remember exact details of what I disliked about it but I recall it being sluggish, poor build quality and bad in the wet compared to my current Kaaz with hi lift blade and slightly sped up engine.
